Industrial Revolution - Book Report
never does homework Copyright 2002 by revolution Report, Elizabeth Yeow. Included here with permission of the author. #9;Every fall excitement fills the air as students arrive at school with new backpacks and Jf van schalkwyk, school supplies, eager to meet their new teacher. Always a new beginning, the start of school allows every student to have a fresh beginning and make this year the best year ever. Yet within weeks of the start of school, teachers begin to revolution see a certain pattern emerging: the Letter Letters same students repeatedly neglect to turn in industrial, homework. The teacher will then remind, reprimand, take away recess, and threaten to call home and talk to their mom and dad. Title! Occasionally, this will work and the student will miraculously appear with homework in hand, most of the time there are just excuses. More often, the teacher becomes more frustrated and disheartened, the student#146;s grades drop and he or she will feel like a failure.
The repetition of this scenario caused me to really consider the value and effect of homework. Revolution Book Report! Every year, and this year is no exception, I have at least one student, usually two, who never bring their completed homework back on time. I was puzzled by these students#146; attitudes towards homework. I wanted to understand more about their perceptions of homework and to dissertation abstracts on cohousing find out revolution Book what kind of support they were receiving at home. Perhaps, these students do not understand the homework or maybe their parents are unable to help them.
Maybe the Analysis Essay instructions were unclear or the homework is too difficult for them. I wanted to understand more about their parents#146; views about school and Report, homework. I also wanted to worst know more about industrial revolution Book other issues that may be going on at home. What are some things that I could do to help them bring their homework back? As I began this study, I had several assumptions. I saw homework is an important part of their schoolwork and is a reinforcement of what is learned at school. This extra practice is my essay in 2 helpful to students and when students do not do their homework it affects how they do in school. Also, lack of finished homework may be an indication of their attitude towards school or learning. I teach at Clara Barton Elementary School (pseudonym), a public elementary school in Report, the suburbs of a metropolitan area, about 15 miles outside of Washington, DC. At the Analysis Essay Writing beginning of industrial this school year Clara Barton Elementary School switched from Sample Appeal Letter Appeal Letters a traditional school calendar to a year round calendar. The community around Clara Barton Elementary School is comprised of single family homes, townhouses, and Report, multifamily dwellings. The majority of the students that attend Clara Barton Elementary School live in the townhouse community directly behind the Write in 2 hours school. The townhouse community accepts Section 8 housing certificates. Many of the townhouses house more than one family. There is a high transience rate at Clara Barton Elementary School of about 40 percent. Seventy-five percent of the school is composed of ethnic- and revolution Report, language-minority students. More than 22 countries and many different languages are represented at Clara Barton Elementary School. Many of the Sample Letter Learn Appeal Letters students that attend Clara Barton Elementary School are from industrial revolution low-income families. Clara Barton Elementary School receives funding from Title I and many of the students receive free or reduced lunches.
The school is organized primarily into self-contained classrooms. Your Interaction On Quora?! The school does not have a formal homework policy, but in the staff handbook there is a recommended amount of industrial Book time students should spend on homework based on grade level. Third grade students should have between 30-60 minutes of Write my essay hours homework per evening. The school slogan is revolution Book Report Clara Barton Reads and dissertation, students are encouraged to read 20 minutes at home every night as part of their homework. This is my fourth year teaching and I have taught third grade at Clara Barton Elementary for Book Report all four years.
I am an Asian female. The students in my class are all in the third grade. The class is a dissertation composed of 18 students, 8 boys and 10 girls. Sixteen out industrial Book Report of the 18 are ESOL students. Eight of the Essay Writing students speak Spanish at industrial Report, home, 5 speak Vietnamese, and 1 speaks another language. Homework in my classroom is Literary Writing assigned Monday through Thursday evenings and industrial revolution Book, usually includes spelling, reading, and Sample Appeal Letter Appeal, math. When students arrive at school in the morning they take out their homework and stack it on Book Report, a table at the back of the room. While they are putting their backpacks, books, and Write my essay in 2 hours, jackets away I check in their homework. Book Report! Any student who does not bring in completed homework has to finish their homework during free activity time.
Selecting a Focus Group. As I looked over What has been your on Quora? my homework grade sheet I noticed that I had three students, all boys, who repeatedly did not bring in their homework. Two of the boys, Jose and Book Report, Juan (pseudonyms), are Hispanic and one, Aaron (pseudonym), is Literary Analysis Essay African-American. Originally I decided to look at industrial revolution, all three students, but then Juan moved mid-year. So, I had two students to focus on, but the more I collected data and reflected I realized that I really was focusing more on Jose. Due to time constraints and the inability to cohousing abstracts on cohousing contact Aaron#146;s mother I decided to focus this study about Jose.
#9;Jose is a third grade, ESOL student. Industrial Book Report! His primary language is Spanish; however he is very fluent in English. Cohousing Dissertation! Jose has helped translate a few words for me before. Industrial Book Report! He is the oldest child in his family and has one younger sibling who is not old enough yet for school. He lives with his mother, father, grandmother, and younger sister. His father and mother both work full-time. Schalkwyk! His father often has to work night shifts and sometimes does not get to see Jose much because of his work schedule. Jose has attended Clara Barton Elementary School since kindergarten and lives in the townhouse community behind the school. Jose loves to draw during his free moments and will frequently take out a notebook and draw action figures.
Jose takes Tae Kwon Doe classes in industrial revolution, the evenings and has been worst interaction, frequently talks about how he enjoys these classes. Industrial Revolution Book Report! He is well-liked at school and has many friends, both boys and girls, in his class. He is reading on Letters, grade level, but his writing and industrial Book, math are below grade level. Frequently Jose needs short extensions on Literary Essay Writing, in-class assignments. As I considered my puzzlement over students#146; attitudes towards homework I realized there may be many different things contributing to this puzzling situation. My own beliefs and values may be contributing to this puzzling situation. Perhaps my expectations for completed homework are too high or I am giving too much homework. My expectation that students should have and do homework may be influenced by industrial revolution Report, my experience with homework as a child.
#9;In the last thirty years the controversy over the value of homework has come up again and again. Depending on the decade there are either demands for more homework or cries for less homework. Schalkwyk! Proponents for homework believe that it can help students retain more, improve study skills, and teach students that learning can take place anywhere. In addition, homework can promote independence and responsibility and it can help parents connect with what their children are learning in industrial revolution, school. Opponents of homework believe that homework can hinder children from participating in other beneficial activities, such as sports or scouts. In addition, parental involvement with homework can confuse students if their parents use techniques that are different than their teachers. Writing A Dissertation! Homework can also accentuate the disparity between students from Report low-income homes and students from middle-class homes. Cohousing Abstracts On Cohousing! Students from low-income homes may have more difficulty completing an assignment (Cooper, 2001). It is Book Report also possible that there is a cultural mismatch between what is emphasized at home and what is emphasized at school. My belief that homework is important and should be given Monday through Thursday nights is also emphasized by the administration at my school.
Perhaps Jose#146;s parents do not value schoolwork and Writing, homework as much as it is emphasized in school. They may feel that homework is repetitious and unnecessary for their child. Maybe they feel they can provide more authentic learning after school for their children by providing them with cultural, athletic, or other experiences. Parents may feel that these other activities will benefit their child more and Book, may therefore not stress homework. Cohousing! It is also possible that parents may not value school and this feeling is conveyed to students. Outside influences may also affect Jose. Perhaps he has seen older friends or relatives who do not do their homework. Industrial Book Report! He may view these older ones as cool or maybe he has seen kids on television or in movies that do not do their homework.
Another outside influence might be the economic situation of the family. The family may be struggling to make ends meet and there may be difficulties at home that are a higher priority to Write in 2 hours students than homework. #9;These cultural influences are important for me to industrial revolution Report look at my essay, because they could change the revolution Book way I administer homework or the amount of homework that I give. After considering all of the possible cultural influences, I decided to narrow them down to the two that I believe to be the most significant. The two cultural influences that I thought might be the most applicable to my puzzlement are teacher beliefs (CIP 3.1) and a cultural mismatch between home and school (CIP 3.3.2). My beliefs as the teacher affect my giving of homework, my expectation that it be done, and how much I actually assign to students. I believe that one of the strongest influences on young children is their family and interaction, their home. Since young children are still very much under the direct charge of their parents, if they bring in their homework or not is industrial revolution Report especially dependent on their parents.
Their parents have control over whether or not they are given time after school to complete homework. The school culture emphasizes an importance on homework and What on Quora?, this may not coincide with parental beliefs or practices. This discord will ultimately affect how a child is Book perceived by his/her teacher and how successful he/she is phd thesis academically. In order to industrial Book Report determine what cultural influences were contributing to my puzzlement I needed to gather information about my beliefs. I chose to look at these by journaling, a technique recommended in the Cultural Inquiry Process (Jacob, 1999). Cohousing Dissertation Abstracts On Cohousing! In my journaling I needed to consider why this situation was puzzling to me and why I think this situation is happening. Revolution! My beliefs, background, and previous experience influence how I look at this puzzling situation and how I approach this situation. If I can identify my beliefs and values then I can see how they might be contributing to Jf van phd thesis the puzzling situation. After reflecting and journaling about my homework beliefs I had the opportunity to discuss the Report topic of my research with my colleagues at school. Through this discussion I realized that I should ask them what their beliefs were about homework and find out abstracts on cohousing how much homework the other third grade teachers were giving (CIP 4.1). #9;Information also needed to industrial Report be gathered about a mismatch between the student#146;s home culture and the school curriculum (CIP 4.3.2).
The school or the school district might have a homework policy that I am unaware of. If there is a homework policy then there is not a strong emphasis on it and it does not seem to influence teachers and how often or how much homework they give. Weisenthal, Cooper, Greenblatt Marcus, (1997) found that schools with a strong emphasis on homework influenced how often teachers gave homework. I realized it was important to look at the school culture and then to look at Writing, the home culture and see if there was a mismatch. In order to find out more information about Jose#146;s home culture I considered visiting his home but I had difficulty contacting his parents.
I sent many notes home, called home and tried to leave messages. Eventually I was able to speak to Jose#146;s father. I also interviewed students using a modified version of The Student Survey of Homework Practices (Grajria, M. Salend, S. J., 1995) to try to determine what the home environment and culture was like as well as to industrial Report find out dissertation abstracts on cohousing what their attitude was toward homework. I looked at Jose#146;s school history and contacted Jose#146;s second grade teacher to see what Jose had been like as a second grader. #9;I grew up in an environment where receiving and industrial revolution, doing homework was part of Jf van a daily routine.
Teachers gave me homework, my parents expected that I would have it done, and if I did not do it I felt horrible. Industrial Revolution Report! My parents always made sure that my homework was done when I was in elementary school. By the Letter Learn Appeal Letters time I reached middle school and high school I had acquired the habit of doing homework independently. I have always believed that homework helps students learn and reinforces concepts. Industrial Revolution Book! The question I have to ask myself in this puzzlement is Do I know for sure that homework benefits students? In order to answer this question I decided to look at some research that has been done on Literary Analysis Essay Writing, the benefits or detriments of homework. The correlation between completing homework and Book, academic achievement has been the subject of much research.
Depending on Write in 2, which side of the homework argument one is on, research can have both positive and negative effects on students. According to Cooper (2001) some positive academic effects of homework include retention and understanding of material, improved study skills, improved attitudes toward school. Some nonacademic effects of homework include promoting independent and industrial Book, responsibility in students and involving parents in what is going on in the classroom. Has Been Your Interaction On Quora?! Homework also has some negative effects, such as boredom, denying students leisure time and revolution Book Report, the benefits of wholesome learning from Write in 2 hours scouts or sports. Homework can lead to cheating and can emphasize the disparity between the homes of low-income and middle class students. Students from low-income homes may have to work after school or may not have a quiet place to study at industrial, home. When looking at 50 studies done on homework and student achievement, Cooper (2001) found that homework had little or no effect on has been, student achievement at the elementary level. #9;After reading some research on the effects of homework on industrial Report, academic achievement I had to seriously consider how my beliefs fit into this. Jf Van Schalkwyk Phd Thesis! I realized that giving homework benefited me as the Book Report teacher. Cohousing! These benefits matched the benefits teachers expressed having in the Homework Attitude and industrial, Behaviour Inventory for Teachers (Weisenthal et al., 1997). Homework improved my ability to schalkwyk cover the curriculum and acted as a kind of bridge between the industrial revolution Book Report last lesson and the next one.
Although homework benefited me, as the teacher, I found myself reconsidering why I was handing out homework to students. Abstracts On Cohousing! According to Kralovec and Buell (2001), elementary school students show no significant academic gain from doing homework. So, if homework was not helping students academically then how worthwhile was giving homework? #9; I found out revolution Book that the other two third grade teachers, both males, at my school were not giving as much homework as I was. One teacher usually gave only spelling and reading as homework. Jf Van Phd Thesis! Every once in a while he would give math homework. The other third grade teacher usually gave math and reading as homework and rarely gave spelling homework. I, on the other hand, gave math, spelling, and reading as homework.
Why weren#146;t the other teachers giving as much homework as I was? According to Weisenthal et al. (1997) some teachers may go easy on themselves so they have less homework to collect and to grade. I decided to go back and interview the other third grade teachers to find out industrial Book Report what their beliefs about homework were. One of the Sample Appeal Learn Appeal teachers did not believe that giving homework was a big deal unless a child did not understand the homework. Industrial Revolution Book! He believed that homework should be given for students to build responsibility and for character building. Cohousing! In his experience the ones that don#146;t bring their homework back are usually the ones that don#146;t understand the concepts.
He also felt that at revolution Book, the elementary level if students pay attention in class then they will achieve and homework will not necessarily help them achieve. The other third grade teacher believed that homework should be a reinforcement of what is taught in Writing title, school and he felt that it made a difference in their achievement at school. He said that he could tell the next day by student performance if a student did or did not do their homework. He also believed that homework helped students learn to be responsible and build a good work ethic. After discussing homework policies and their beliefs about homework with my colleagues I went to the principal and asked her if we had a school wide homework policy. Industrial Book! She referred me to the staff handbook. Although there is Sample Appeal Letters not a school wide homework policy, there were some generally accepted principles that should govern teachers when assigning homework. Some of the principles include, flexibility and differences in the assignments to individual students, homework should be reasonable in view of the pupil#146;s situation including health, housing conditions, outside work or responsibility, leisure-time activity and conflicting demands of revolution home and school. On the daily announcements students are encouraged to read for 20 minutes every night as homework. Any homework given out in addition to this is up to cohousing dissertation the individual teacher. I also looked through Homework Helper: A Guide for Teachers which was published by the school district.
This guide was handed out at Book, a staff meeting at Jf van phd thesis, the beginning of the school year and teachers were encouraged to use it as a guide. Since that time homework has not been discussed with the staff. According to the guide the Book purpose of homework is to practice skills, reinforce academic concepts, extend learning, promote good study skills, apply new skills and concepts, involve parents, and develop positive attitudes toward school and learning. The guide does not discuss the amount of homework to be given. Any homework, aside from the daily reading, is up to the individual teacher. #9;In order to gather more information about Jose#146;s home culture I tried to has been your worst interaction on Quora? contact Jose#146;s parents through notes and phone calls home. After repeated attempts to industrial Report contact Jose#146;s parents, his father appeared one afternoon at my classroom door.
It appeared that he had finally received one of the many messages I left for him. I was very excited to meet with him, but wondered how the meeting would go as we did not have a translator. Dissertation! After a few minutes I thought it would be appropriate because it seemed that he had enough of a grasp of the industrial Book Report English language for us to schalkwyk phd thesis be able to communicate without a translator. Our meeting was short (we really did need a translator). I asked him a few questions about his job and Jose#146;s behavior and work habits at home. He seemed very responsive and concerned.
Apparently Jose had been telling him since the beginning of the year that he did not have any homework. He had believed Jose and did not try to contact me to confirm it. He and his wife both worked long hours and many times he had to work the night shift. Often when Jose comes home his mother is at work and his father is either at work or sleeping. His grandmother, who speaks only Spanish, is there to watch him. Jose#146;s father said that he or his wife always asked Jose if he had finished his homework. Book Report! He did mention that one afternoon when he told Jose his friend had to Literary Essay Writing go home he saw Jose give his friend a piece of paper that looked like homework.
His father didn#146;t ask about it and forgot about it until his meeting with me. The weekly notes that I had been sending home did not reach Jose#146;s parents either. Jose#146;s father suggested that he could sign Jose#146;s homework every evening and maybe this would help Jose do his homework and bring it to school. Revolution Report! The day after meeting with Jose#146;s father, Jose did not have his homework. Appeal Letter Letters! He did bring his homework the next day signed by revolution Book Report, his father, but since then he hasn#146;t had anything signed by either parent. #9;I realized through this brief interaction with Jose#146;s father that he and his wife both cared about their son and his success in school. However, I realized that they also had other things, such as tae kwon do lessons, that they wanted their son to Letter Appeal learn. Industrial Revolution Book Report! Gonz á lez (1995) points out how important it is for teachers to know their students#146; culture and to not have a prepackaged awareness of cultural diversity. They were providing nonacademic experiences for their son that they felt were important for his development as a person. In addition, I realized that Jose#146;s father wanted his son to worst interaction on Quora? do his homework, but was very limited due to his work schedule to encourage and help Jose. I#146;m not sure why Jose#146;s mother did not return phone calls or come to school with Jose.
I have only seen Jose#146;s father with him when attending school events. Although Jose#146;s father indicated that they asked Jose about his homework they did not seem to Report do anything to Jf van schalkwyk encourage or require that Jose do his homework. Since they may not have been encouraging him to do his homework Jose may have been getting the message that homework was not valuable to his parents. #9;I contacted Jose#146;s second grade teacher to Book Report discuss his homework habits in second grade. I found out that he rarely brought in finished homework and Learn Letters, Jose#146;s second grade teacher frequently tried to contact his parents to discuss work habits. She noticed that when his father had to work the night shift Jose came to school quite disheveled and without any homework. When Jose#146;s father switched to working during the day Jose seemed more attentive in school and sometimes was able to bring in finished homework.
Jose#146;s achievement in revolution Book Report, school, including homework completion, seemed to be directly affected by his father#146;s work schedule. Tapia (1998) indicated that the most important factor influencing poor students#146; academic performance is family stability. Jose#146;s feeling of family stability seemed to be affected by seeing his father regularly during the afternoon and dissertation on cohousing, evening. #9;To find out my class#146; attitude and homework habits I passed out the Homework Survey to Book Report my whole class and abstracts on cohousing, read it to them as they circled responses. I emphasized that this was not for a grade and they should answer exactly how they felt and not be worried about being wrong. Some sample questions from the survey are as follows: - I get easily distracted when I am doing my homework. - I feel unsure about industrial Book Report which homework assignment to do first. - I feel teachers are unfair and give too much homework. - Activities such as sports and What has been your worst, music are more important to me than doing my homework. - Someone checks my homework for me when I am done.
- Someone at revolution Book Report, home asks me if I have finished my homework. I handed out the surveys and then read through each item and explained any of the Writing a dissertation title questions that students did not understand. As I looked over industrial the surveys I realized that my students were limited in their ability to self-report because of their young age and their self-reports may not be identical to their actual practices at home. For example, Aaron reported that he always turned in his homework when he actually rarely turned in his homework. Nine students, half of the class indicated that they need someone to remind them to Sample Letter Learn Appeal do their homework. Half the class indicated that they sometimes need help with their homework. It was interesting to note that Jose indicated that he does not like to do homework, many times feels he needs help with his homework, and he thinks homework is Book Report important only some of the time. Jose also indicated that he received daily reminders at home to do his homework, but despite these reminders he did not always do his homework. Interventions and in 2 hours, Monitoring. #9;One intervention I tried was to change homework assignments so there wasn#146;t as much of Book a mismatch between Jose#146;s culture and the school curriculum (CIP 5.3.2).
Maybe Jose did not see the relevance of the homework that was given and needed homework that was more meaningful. Kravolec and Buell (2001) found homework could be very disruptive of family life. It can interfere with what parents want to teach their children and punish children in poverty from being poor. Parents may have cultural and abstracts, religious beliefs or life skills that they feel are important for their children to learn, but homework may interfere with the industrial revolution Book limited time they have with their children to share those beliefs or skills. Cohousing Dissertation Abstracts On Cohousing! Since Jose frequently talked about Tae Kwon Do lessons and other things that he did during the week with his parents, I realized that it was important to revolution Report them for their son to Literary Analysis Essay Writing be trained in industrial revolution Report, some kind of sport.
They might also feel that as a growing boy Jose needed some physical activity after school. Although Jose indicated that his parents asked him about his homework they did not ask to see his homework. They believed him when he said he did not have homework or that he had finished his homework. It is possible that they did not have the time or energy to look at Writing title, his homework. Revolution Book! They both worked long hours and it is What your interaction on Quora? possible that they had many daily survival demands that are more important than Jose#146;s elementary school homework.
Since outside influences can not always be controlled or changed, I realized that interventions had to be made at the school or classroom level to help students (CIP 5.4.1). It seemed that Jose was not getting the support that he needed from home because his parents#146; time is occupied with work and revolution, other basic survival issues, so one intervention was to give less challenging homework. Although all the homework I give students should be able to do independently, he had indicated on has been your, his Homework Survey that he needed help a lot. Industrial! So, I modified his homework and noticed that he started turning in part of his homework. His parents#146; limited English may affect Jose, so I tried to give more homework that was self-explanatory and made sure that he understood all the my essay hours directions before he left school. Another intervention I tried was to allow Jose to begin his homework at school. I let him start his homework at school. Industrial Report! I noticed that the Writing a dissertation next day sometimes the only part he would have to turn in was the part he had started in school. Revolution! Jose seemed to have difficulty getting his homework from school to home and then back to school. So, I gave Jose a checklist with a Velcro check that he could move when he had completed a task. The checklist was to help him write his homework down, collect the in 2 materials he needed for industrial revolution home, put them in his backpack.
His father was given a matching one to title keep at home. Before leaving to go home everyday he had to Book make sure to check in Sample Appeal Appeal Letters, with me so I could check his backpack. After receiving the checklist I watched Jose everyday and noticed that he wasn#146;t following it. I reminded him and encouraged him to revolution use it, but he still didn#146;t use it. On a daily basis I continue to check Jose#146;s backpack and Write, give verbal reminders to use his homework checklist. He lost the revolution Book Velcro check for his end-of-the-day checklist on his desk, so I gave him a new one, but he still hasn#146;t used it. He has gotten used to checking with me before leaving.
For about two weeks I reminded him that he needed to see me before he walked out the door. Now he remembers on Writing title, his own that he has to revolution Book Report show me his homework inside his backpack. He comes up to me with his backpack open and my essay hours, his homework at the top so I can see it. I send informal weekly progress reports home to his parents so that they know how he is doing in school and whether or not he has been turning in his homework. Summary and Implications. After all the interventions and monitoring I can say that Jose turns in his homework about half the time. Report! For the first half of the year he rarely turned in any homework assignments and the ones he turned in were usually unfinished. He seems to have more of an understanding that for What worst interaction me doing homework is just as important as doing work in school. I also have a better understanding of his home situation and that although his parents want him to industrial revolution do well in school they also have other things that they feel are important for Sample Appeal Letter Appeal Jose to learn. The communication between home and school is definitely better.
In addition I feel that I am more aware that the situation at industrial revolution, home greatly affects students#146; ability to work on homework and bring it back to school. This inquiry and research on the benefits and negative effects of homework on students like Jose has really caused me to Sample Appeal Letter Letters rethink why I give homework and the amount of homework I give. I realized that my beliefs and values about revolution Book Report homework really contributed to my puzzlement. I have really been considering and debating within myself the issue of homework. I feel like I have been forcing my culture and background on students and making them relive how I went through school. Do I give homework for character building or do I really believe that it will help students#146; academic achievement?
Checking homework usually takes fifteen minutes in the morning. Maybe this time would be better spent giving minilessons at the beginning of the day or building community in the classroom. Although the school and school district set policies for homework, they do not stress that homework must be given every night. As a result of this research, I want to make sure that I give meaningful homework. I have also decided to phd thesis give more differentiated homework.
Students like Jose seemed to industrial revolution Report be overwhelmed with the amount of homework that I give so I will try adjusting assignments to fit the individual student as necessary. The Beginner’s Guide to Writing a Perfect Software Testing Resume (with Free Sample Resume) A commonly asked question, mostly by industrial revolution Book, newcomers into IT, is- “Do you have a sample software testing resume that I can use?” Sure, we all learn by seeing. Abstracts On Cohousing. To begin with we need to establish a point of reference, so there is no harm in industrial revolution Book Report, checking out someone else’s resume. However, relying completely on it and trying to Analysis Essay Writing tailor it to suit our needs is not always the best way to revolution Book create our own resume. How would it be if I took a picture of a perfect looking person and photo shopped my face to abstracts on cohousing it – it just would not be right, would it? The same rationale applies here. Each of us come from different educational backgrounds, different professional exposure and Book Report, are at different proficiency levels – our resume has to be a snap shot of everything that is uniquely us. The piece of paper (or electronic document) is a representation of ourselves when we could not be there in person. Therefore it is of utmost important to let your resume capture the essence of who you are as a professional.
In this article I tried to put together a few simple pointers that will help ease this software testing QA resume preparation process , especially for first timers. To start with, these are some of the pre-activities that should go into resume preparation: #1. Try to a dissertation make a list of all skills, education, work experience, platforms, technologies, projects, etc. #2. For a start, forget about the format and template. Sticky notes, piece of paper, notepad on industrial, your computer – all are perfectly good starting points. #3.
The list could look something like this: #4. Pick up the technical skills section and try to sort them in the order of your proficiency. I generally, use the rating method on my skills. Sample Learn Appeal Letters. On a scale of Book Report 1-5, 5 being the expert and 1 being just familiar- try to assign a rating to your list. #5. Take a moment to What has been your worst interaction on Quora? review your readiness with respect to skill acquisition required to apply the job of your choice.
For example: From the above list, it is clear that I am not at the required skill level to revolution Book Report apply for a QTP position. That is ok. There are 2 options at this stage: a) If QTP is not my area of interest, I just move on revolution Book, and apply for a manual testing job that better suits my skill.
b) But if I want to pursue automation testing I could take a few days time, work on building the skill. Once I move to anywhere between 3-5 rating level, I may reconsider a QTP career. Once listing, rating and self evaluating is through, the next step is to think of a template. Every IT resume has the following sections. Of course, the Literary Analysis, order in which these sections appear is a personal choice.
As for industrial revolution Report me, I find the below order very effective, so stick to What has been it if you think so too. a) The header – basic information about how to reach you – Name, Address, Email ID, Phone number, link to your profile on a professional network, certifications etc. b) Objective – Optional section, especially useful to explain your choice of industrial revolution Book Report getting into IT- QA field if you have not been from What worst interaction on Quora? a computer science background and have a different career prior to now, or if you have been from a certain branch of IT and want to transition to another one. c) Professional summary – a gist of your skills, your strengths, roles performed technologies you know, achievements awards, certifications if any, etc. Start with the points that are most significant in the list.
d) Certifications – Include this section, if you have been certified in any areas. Revolution Book Report. Note: I have come across some new comers who include – “preparing for ISQTB” or something to that effect in this section. This is generally not apt. Include only the What your worst on Quora?, ones that you have already been certified. Book Report. For multiple certifications use a table. e) Work experience – list all the Write in 2, organizations you worked for until now. A table works best for this. Order the columns in industrial Report, this table by keeping your most recent experience as the first row.
f) Technical Skills – List all your skills acquired on-job and off-job according to categories. g) Educational information – Tabular format works best for dissertation on cohousing this too. Start with your highest education as the first row. Revolution. Provide the P.G/ graduation/10+2/10 standard, year of passing, institution/city you went to Analysis next. It is optional to include the score you received. h) Projects – Projects is industrial revolution Report, a main section in itself. This is What has been your interaction on Quora?, where specific information about the kind of industrial revolution Book Report work you have performed during the course of a dissertation title your previous employment leading up to now.
In case of multiple projects start with your most recent project and move to the next. For each project include: Client: (optional and wherever relevant) Duration: Start Month/Year – End Month/Year. Description: (A small paragraph about the application that was worked on. Detailed functionality is revolution Book Report, not necessary)
Roles and Responsibilities: Use bulleted points to describe what your day to day activities on job were. i) References – Provide names and contact information of your previous managers and/or colleagues whose feedback can be sought. Alternately, you can choose to provide it on Writing a dissertation title, request by industrial, saying “References will be provided on request”. Now that we have the information gathered during the pre-resume step and the template, all it takes is to organize the information into a template. Use the template attached for more clarity. These projects are going to be off-job, self initiated. For example: pick gmail.com or amazon.com and test it thoroughly following a testing process that is close to real-time project. Document your results and include that as your experience. 6. If you are from a non-IT background and want to include that experience, keep it to revolution Report a minimum. 7. Resumes nowadays are being picked by schalkwyk, search engines. So include as many keywords as possible and include them repetitively. Although, use them with caution. Forecast values of industrial revolution Report occupancy and ADR can be applied to Appeal Letter Learn Letters the model to produce a forecast of NOI. READ MORE. How Revenue Managers Win Using Group Data and Technology By Jim Vandevender, Chief Marketing Officer, Knowland. Revenue management has come a long way since its early days of basic yield management. Many consider 1989 a pivotal turning point when revenue management became a permanent part of hotel management and not just a passing trend.
This was the year when Sheryl E. Kimes' oft-cited paper “The Basics of Yield Management” appeared in Cornell Quarterly. Hotels quickly realized that revenue management was a key component of winning the occupancy, ADR, and RevPar race. Hospitality revenue management teams are increasingly integral, strategic, and proactive participants in driving revenue streams. Large and small hospitality organizations alike are committed to the critical function this discipline serves and have developed structures to support the professionals who focus on Book Report this key area of a hotel’s success. With advancements in cohousing abstracts on cohousing, market data, decision science, and technology, revenue management continues to evolve. This is especially true of the groups and meetings segment, where revenue managers are using market data and advanced analytics to inform their actions, hone sales strategies, and unite sales and revolution Book Report, revenue management toward a common goal. The Fourth Industrial Revolution: what it means and how to…
Fibromyalgia Syndrome: An Introduction (paper) Note: This paper was written as an assignment for a medical communications course. I’ve published it here after receiving several requests that I do so. Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a debilitating neurological disorder characterized by revolution Book Report, chronic widespread pain and fatigue. It affects approximately 2% of the population, and is more common in women than in men. Dissertation Abstracts On Cohousing! Central nervous system sensitization affects the entire body, leading to many secondary symptoms. This paper will cover the history, symptoms, and causes of revolution Book Report FMS as well as recent research and known treatments for my essay the syndrome. Fibromyalgia has been described as a full-body migraine. Another common explanation is to revolution Report compare everyday life with FMS as being similar to a dissertation the aches and pains associated with a severe case of influenza. FMS patients experience intermittent flares, which are episodes of increased symptomology. Flares usually occur in response to physical or emotional stress—a schedule change, an illness or injury, a new job, the birth of a child, etc.
While fibromyalgia is industrial Book Report, not considered a degenerative disorder, its symptoms usually become more severe if the patient also has a degenerative disorder such as arthritis. First, a patient must have experienced continuous pain in on cohousing, all four quadrants of the body for at least three months (Wolfe et al., 1990). Doctors will usually order many different tests in order to rule out arthritis, Lyme disease, and Book Report, other conditions which might be confused with fibromyalgia. The key diagnostic tool for FMS is the tender point exam. No more than 4kg/1.54km2 of pressure is applied to 18 specific points (see Table 1).
If there is significant pain in at least 11 of the 18 points, the patient may be diagnosed with fibromyalgia. There are so many common secondary symptoms that it is not unusual for a patient to be treated by multiple specialists for Literary Writing those symptoms over a period of years before she is diagnosed with FMS. Secondary symptoms need not be present for industrial revolution Book Report diagnosis, and will vary from cohousing dissertation, one patient to industrial revolution Book the next. The night racks my bones, and the pain that gnaws me knows no rest, laments Job (The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version, Job 30:17). It’s easy to imagine that Job suffered from FMS. University of Edinburgh surgeon William Balfour described fibromyalgia, which he called rheumatism, in 1815 (Balfour, 1815, as cited in Starlanyl, 1999). Since then, the disease has been called fibrositis, nonarticular rheumatism, and dissertation abstracts on cohousing, even tender lady syndrome (Marek, 2003). The disorder was finally labeled fibromyalgia syndrome by Philip Hench (1976). The American College of revolution Book Report Rheumatology published its criteria for the diagnosis of fibromyalgia in 1990 (Wolfe et al.). The American Medical Association accepted the criteria in has been worst interaction, 1987, followed by the World Health Organization in 1992 (WHO, 2004). After almost two centuries of study, the etiology of fibromyalgia is industrial Book Report, still a matter of much debate.
There are no lab tests for Sample Letter Learn Letters FMS. There are no discernible abnormalities of the muscles, bones, joints or connective tissues. It is industrial revolution Book, known to involve central nervous system changes (Starlanyl and Copeland, 2001), but those changes may be caused by or be the dissertation cause of the disorder. Industrial Revolution! Others have proposed that sleep disturbances, metabolic imbalances, malnutrition, or toxic exposure cause FMS. For the last 25 years, most practitioners have treated FMS as an Sample Appeal Letter Appeal Letters autoimmune disorder, similar to arthritis.
Levels of antinuclear antibodies are used to diagnose autoimmune disorders, but the presence of those antibodies is similar in most FMS patients and healthy controls (Starlanyl Copeland, 2001). Travell and Simons believed that untreated myofascial trigger points caused fibromyalgia (1999, as cited in Davies, 2001). Revolution Report! Trigger points, though, refer pain to different parts of the schalkwyk phd thesis body. Tender points, as used in the diagnosis of FMS, do not involve referred pain. Industrial! While some FMS patients do have myofascial trigger points, those points are not present in all FMS patients (Starlanyl, 1999). Some doctors persist in believing that FMS is a psychiatric disorder, but researchers have been unable to distinguish between FMS, rheumatoid arthritis and Jf van schalkwyk phd thesis, other patients who experience chronic pain using psychiatric techniques (Starlanyl Copeland, 2001). Revolution Report! Some physicians have reclassified fibromyalgia as a functional somatic syndrome, claiming that it is characterized more by disability than medical explanation, suggesting behavioral and psychiatric treatment rather than any other therapies (Barsky Borus, 1999).
While the Writing incidence of psychiatric disorders such as depression is no higher in industrial revolution Book, patients with FMS than in those with other chronic pain disorders, the number of fibromyalgia patients who have experienced acute or long term trauma or abuse is far higher than that of the general population (Romans et al., 2002 and Van Houdenhove et al, 2004). In the last ten years, several new technologies have been used to prove that FMS is a physical disorder. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and single positron emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans of FMS patients’ brains show significant abnormalities in regional cerebral blood flow (Graceley et al., 2002 and Mountz et al., 1998). FMRIs also demonstrate significantly increased activity in pain-relevant areas of the Literary Writing brain in response to stimuli when compared to revolution Report a control group (Cook et al., 2004). Italian researchers have found elevated levels of the neuropeptide substance P, which is involved in the perception of pain, in the spinal fluid of FMS patients (De Stefano et al, 2000). Unfortunately, these tests are too invasive or too expensive for diagnostic use.
Studies at the University of Florida College of Medicine show that FMS patients feel pain longer than normal controls (Staud et al., 2003). One of the researchers, Roland Staud, also found that once a subject with fibromyalgia is exposed to painful stimuli, that patient stays more sensitive to further stimuli. Unlike the control subjects, the patients also experienced widespread pain as a result of the stimuli, which points to central nervous system sensitization as a factor in FMS (Staud et al., 2004). Van Houdenhove et al. cite multiple studies regarding the effect of long-term stressors on my essay in 2 the central nervous system on various mammals, including humans. Human studies also suggest that the cumulative effects of physical or psychosocial burden may increase susceptibility to stress in later life, either through sensitization or failed inhibition of the Book HPA-axis, possibly due to glucocorticoid-related hippocampal damage. For example, retrospective studies have shown that emotional, physical or sexual abuse during childhood may not only increase future risks for anxiety, depression and somatisation, but even organic diseases such as coronary disorders, CVS, diabetes, CPOD and has been, viral infections—which may be related to lifelong hyperreactivity of the industrial LC-NE and HPA axes. Literary Essay! (2004, p. Industrial Revolution Book! 268). Those effects could explain the central nervous system sensitization noted by Staud et al.
Raison and Miller found that excessive glucocorticoid secretion due to genetic predisposition or exposure to long-term stress can cause hippocampal brain damage (2003), further supporting Van Houdenhove’s results. Raison and Miller are not the only researchers who see a genetic factor in fibromyalgia. Staud posits a genetic predisposition towards FMS (2004), as do Yunus et al. Cohousing Dissertation Abstracts On Cohousing! (1999) and industrial, Pellegrino et al., 1989. Van Houdenhove, however, points out that generational behavioral cycles, such as those often seen in abusive families, could explain some of the apparent heredity (2004). Most treatment of dissertation on cohousing FMS is limited to revolution Book Report management of symptoms. Various pain remedies, from over-the-counter medications to opiates, are usually the first line of treatment.
Muscle relaxants, physical therapy, and massage help some patients. Trigger point therapy and injections are another possibility. Many FMS patients experience difficulties in achieving restful sleep, so physicians commonly prescribe sedatives and tranquilizers. Low doses of abstracts on cohousing anti-seizure medications and atypical antipsychotics, such as Requip and Seroquel, have been found to be effective in helping some fibromyalgia patients to achieve restorative sleep. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), tricyclic antidepressants and other medications that affect neurotransmitters help some fibromyalgia patients (Marek, 2003). Book! Cymbalta, a new medication which inhibits both serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake, seems to improve pain and reduce the number of tender points in FMS patients (Arnold et al., 2004). Acupuncture and biofeedback have been found effective in treatment of fibromyalgia (Ebell and Beck, 2001). Gentle, non-aerobic exercise such as Tai Chi and some forms of yoga may help patients, as well. Stress reduction is one of the Writing most important factors in improving the quality of life for fibromyalgia patients (Williamson, 1998).
Regardless of whether the disorder is caused by stress or not, it is aggravated by stress. While it is impossible for any person to completely avoid stress, it is possible to reduce exposure to Book Report known stressors and learn to dissertation abstracts better cope with those that must be endured. Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs are relatively new in the treatment of fibromyalgia in the US. In Full Catastrophe Living, Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as, the complete ‘owning’ of Book Report each moment of Write in 2 your experience, good, bad, or ugly (1990, p. 11). The theory is that mindfulness can allow patients to reduce their reactions to stress, improving their ability to cope with stressors. Industrial Book! In developing the capacity to step back and observe the flow of consciousness, mindfulness can shortcircuit the fight or flight reaction characteristic of the sympathetic nervous system, allowing individuals to respond to the situation at hand, instead of automatically reacting to it on the basis of past experiences. (Proulx, 3002, p. 201) MBSR programs typically last from 8 to 12 weeks and include instruction in meditation, breathing techniques, physical awareness, and yoga. They often utilize journaling and group discussions regarding attitudes and title, positive thinking. While MBSR participation does not necessarily lead to improvement of the physical symptoms of fibromyalgia, it can lead to improved quality of life for revolution Book Report the fibromyalgia patient. It is unlikely that a cure will be found for fibromyalgia as long as its etiology is not fully understood. Even as the contributing factors are identified, though, the complexity of the syndrome leads one to believe that it is unlikely that any one treatment will provide a panacea.
The progress made in the last fifteen years, though, has led to Letter Learn Letters the reclassification of the disease and revolution, improved treatments, hence an improved prognosis for your all fibromyalgia patients.
